"Put The Bun Down, Walk Away From The Bun"

I have always enjoyed my food
Chris says that it comes from being a twin,
It's Something about having competition at food time.....

Once when I was tucking in to a plate of goodies, he laughed and said that if we were infant birds rather than babies then he was sure that I would have kicked Janet right out of the nest when mommy came-a-calling with a beakful of worms...

Even at a year old I was chubby and  just a little camp!
Of course weight gain is sort of natural when you are fast approaching 50. My regular twice a week badminton games with friend Mike stopped long before we came to Wales.......(because of creaking knees and pressures of work) and we have got into the habit of big meals in the evenings, too many takeaways and for me, the fatty perils of a crisp white wine!
Add to this recipe, a propensity for comfort eating, a liking for big portions ( a legacy from my Grandmother who re enforced love and affection with feeding) and a genetic "Gray double chin" and is it no wonder that I look like a pig in a leotard?

So it is time I do something permanently about it.....
I know I can do it.
A few years ago I lost three stone in six months, and did so fairly easily ...
I just didn't keep it off.
This time I am serious........ I can do it again and for good this time.......Looking like Shelley Winters on a bad day  and having embarrassing, uncontrollable and uncomfortably loud flatulence when I cock my leg over the field gate is the last straw........

There...I have said it publicly........
My Name's John...... and I am a porker.

So from now on Mondays will be my weightwatcher weigh in...Last Monday I was 16 stone exactly
Today I am
15 stone 10 lbs.

  3. cro... go weigh yourself now and blog it... every monday we can give each other a "high five"

  4. I was once 16 stone, but it's difficult to eat without decent teeth, so I am now down to about 14. There's a lesson there somewhere - maybe go out fighting every saturday night?

  5. Good show John.....keep it up....we are all cheering for you.

  6. Excellent John..I stepped on the scales on Saturday and certainly wasn't happy. Just too much fun (and baking) over the holidays!
As of yesterday...both Rudy and I are eschewing the vino, counting the calories and (just me) staying away from red meat. My goal is 10-12lbs...okay, I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but when you are only 5'3", it's certainly a dress-size (which means my present wardrobe is a little on the snug side.
I'll check in with you and Cro next monday, I know my progress won't be quite as good as you men, you always lose weight faster, but I'll expect equal encouragement!

  7. Me too, I want to lose a stone by Easter which is our next trip to France.
Trouble is......it's just not as easy at 60 as it was at 45, when I last lost a stone and a half. Also I was in the right frame of mind then I got this cold.....I know, excuses, excuses.....
Good luck, I'm sure you can do it if you are focussed.

  8. I too have a constant battle with my weight. I don't get on the scales the waist bands tell me all I need to know oh and of course the mirror!
    Good for you John.

  10. Well done John! Seems like a lot of your followers are doing the same. Me too. Trying to get into decent shape and fitness, mainly for a forthcoming trip to Australia to visit our daughters and grandchildren. I find the heat quite exhausting and I try to be as fit as possible before visits. Last time I went to the gym for three months beforehand, this time I have taken up walking,(working up to jogging). Plus watching the diet as well of course. Good luck to all of us!

  11. Don't wear a leotard John, it's not a great look for many of us.

    Seriously though, good luck!

  12. My hubby has already lost a stone since Christmas. If he could just lay off that Canadian whisky he'll do even better.
I'm seeing a thin healthy John in no time:-)

  14. Great job! You can do it! I feel you agony in weight loss too.I was raised in a family of good cooks and big eaters with slow metabolisms...sigh.Oh..umm..how much is a stone?

  15. Yes, Way to go Girlfriend!!! Take a look at my latest post as I am on the same journey you are...

  16. It is so difficult to be on a diet during the holidays. There is so much food around and the temptation is great. I did not do well either and gained back some of the weight I fought so hard to lose these past few months. Today is another day though and it is a chance to start anew. WW is the best plan and you are on the right track. It is a struggle every day, but the rewards of feeling fit and healthy are great.

You don't have to deny yourself that glass of white wine though. It is only 4 points. Just drink slowly and enjoy.

  17. I had to chuckle about the gate, John.
Good luck with diet! I have little will power there.

  18. I'm trying to convert stones into lbs....hold on....220lbs...from 230lb... in one week????Have you actually eaten? That is F.A.B.!
I weigh about 7lbs heavier at the Drs than at home.....guess which scales I believe.YUP, MINE!
Hubby lost a lot of weight last year,he cut out nothing just ate smaller portions.

  20. For those of us who are not 'stoned', that would be 224 pounds. Yes, that is heavy, particularly if you are not 6'8". And the first step is admitting it! And you did. Good.

A suggestion from someone who HAD to watch what he ate (heart disease) and I wasn't overweight, cut back one thing at a time and give yourself plenty of time, like at least a year to do it.

I cut back BAD fats (cheese, there I said that word, fatty meats and I don't do dairy anyway so I didn't have to cut back cow fat!

Then I cut back carbs.....sweets! The food, not you John! lol And I walked and walked and walked. And that should do it! Easy, what?

Good luck with this and it sounded like you meant it!

  22. John, I will be following along to see how you do. I am doing this also starting with water aerobics next week with all the old Granny's. My knee is too painful to run or treadmill at the moment. I find it so hard to do....I have also lost 35lbs and put it back on....quite deflating.

  23. jane and Chris
I lost 4 lbs in one week duh ! xx

    ReplyDelete
  24. Good luck John it isn't easy as I know.
Started cutting out the carbs at the end of August and lost about 1kg [2 lbs] a week. Put it on hold over the holidays and as of today am back on the straight and narrow. Slow and steady works best...well for me anyway [women don't lose weight as fast as men].

  25. OMG, you people sent me right out to our little farm store for abig breakfast of sausages, eggs and whole raw milk. Really, all you people who think starting a diet on Monday Morning is best...insane. Lets start right after lunch instead. Dinner? Bedtime snack?

After I finish imagining a pig in a leotard ;-)...I'll join in your Monday weight-in!

I used a pounds to stones converter and discovered I'm 12 stone, I want to be 10 stone 10 pounds!

Sounds like you've gotten a good start on your journey of shedding excess "stone"...bravo John!

You and Janet are such CUTE toddlers! (Didn't realize you and your sister are fraternal twins!)

  27. Good luck John!
I'm trying to walk my way into shape this Winter and Spring. I wasn't sure but I looked it up and 1 stone equals 14 pounds. So, I got two stones to lose.
I have my fingers crossed for you!

  29. Good for you, John. [Stone(s) are so much kinder than pounds.]

    ReplyDelete
  30. I lost two stone in a year John - did it by cutting out all fatty food, eatin less portion and also not eating cake and sweet things. Hard work but constant glances in the mirror always helps. Good luck.

  33. It really should be the more we eat, the more weight we lose. Bugger. I got rid of my scales years ago... I'm quite happy not knowing what I weigh, thankyouverymuch!

Well, I think there's just more of you to love, but good luck, all the same. Whatever makes you happy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Congrats, John!! I'm fighting that same battle myself. Lane

  35. There seems to be a lot of us on that journey! I’ve lost 36 lbs since August and have 19 lbs to go. Wine and cheese is my weakness and I gave it up until the holidays. Now, I’ve got to get back on the bandwagon. No wine, no cheese, no sugar, the list goes on, but I may have an occasionally G&T! So, I will be cheering you on and hopefully you will keep me motivated!!

  36. Sounds like everyone is in the same boat after all the Christmas goodies - my downfall is bread - can't get enough of the stuff - hey ho - back to the Ryvitas.

  37. It sounds like a very good plan, John. Good luck. I, too, need to lose weight and am slowly doing so -- but I should push myself a little harder -- perhaps you'll inspire me!

  45. I love the Blogosphere, I really do.

For a man who is basically a reclusive alcoholic with an aversion to anything that smacks of social networking I am amazed I have taken so easily to blogging.

But you meet so many interesting people and the beauty of meeting them over the interweb is that you can invite them into your consciousness with a single mouse click, and turn them off just as quickly.

Like any host, I soon recognise those guests, the cards guaranteed to keep the conversation going and they appear in my address book down the right hand side of my blog but once you have more than ten, and especially if you are in a hurry, what makes one stand out from the other?

“Put the bun down, walk away from the bun”

John, I note that many of your readers are bemused because you haven’t written a book. I have just waded, painfully and masochistically through a book called, ‘The Farm’. Since that failed to kill me, I tried another book called ‘Up North’. This one did leave me comatose but Marcia just assumed I was sleeping off the whisky so did not call the emergency services and I eventually recovered.

The point I am trying to make, albeit very clumsily, is that while the two books I mentioned were just shit yet went to print and sold loads, your shit is entertaining. I was scammed into buying these books because I was bored as hell in some African airport and saw them on the shelves. They’re in English, are not about getting rich quick (like most books in a Nigerian bookshop) or about God (like all the rest of the books in a Nigerian bookshop) ergo they’re good.

Imagine how many exhausted itinerant businessmen would reach for their credit card and a book entitled:

Put the Bun down. Walk away from the Bun.
Diary of a foreigner in Wales.

  46. Good for you, John!

I need to lose weight, and but refuse to disclose how overweight I am.

  47. None of our stones around here are quite that large, so I'll be weighing myself in American stones, thank you very much. Or not at all. (Those scales LIE!)Good luck!

  48. omg
you make me laugh out loud!

I recently went vegan and the only fat I eat is from nuts and seeds. Hard in the beginning but after awhile I can't imagine not eating this way.

    Good luck and
    what's a stone?

Count me in, too! The hubster and I started Weight Watchers back in November and so far I've lost (with the help of a weight translator/calculator) almost one and a half stone. I have two and a half to go. (f***!! How did that happen?!! I used to be an athlete.) Otherwise aging is really gonna suck. So I'll have Wednesday night meetings and weigh-in locally, and then Monday check-ins on Going Gently. Good habit-changing to us all!

  52. Hippo has a point. I'd buy a book called "Put the bun down!"

You've struck a chord, John - over 50 comments! I'll join the Monday weigh-in. I'm a teapot (short and stout) and I need to get rid of a few kilos.

  63. I intend to lose some weight this year. A few years ago a friend was told to lose weight, so I went on a diet to support him. We got our fat arses sponsored and raised a few grand from the British Heart Foundation (who were incredibly nonchalant about it when we informed them). I lost just over three stone in 7 months, generally motivated by the fact that we promoted the whole thing through a magazine I was working on.

It does get harder, but you just need to set yourself up for serious ridicule if you fail.

I'm going carb-free for a few week after the weekend. No beer; that scares me. I'll have to dig out the vodka!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I lost 11 pounds some years back simply by eating smaller portions of everything. We've all got into the unfortunate habit of piling our plates high rather than taking just the amount we need.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm wishing you well with this, John.

It's not just weight that we need to consider but also are fat/muscle percentage.

I say that because i am close to being obese for my height (according to height/weight charts), yet i have a lots of muscle. I have a bit more fat than i'd like, and am trying to reduce that. Yet, i see women who are my same height who weigh a stone less (which would put me at the very top end of acceptable range according to the height/weight charts) and yet they're bigger around than i am and wear larger sized clothes.

I also hope you're able to find the foods that work best with your body. I was a 'semi-vegetarian' (chicken or fish once a fortnight) for awhile and my bloodwork indicated that i was on the path to diabetes. My doctor recommended that i needed to get my protein from meat, as i was eating too many carbohydrates for my body (i loved beans and rice or combos of different pulses). I was also eating very low fat, which did me no favours.

I had lost my taste for meat, really, but followed my doctor's advice, and the bloodwork 3 months later showed i was on the right path.

So, i'm back to being an omnivore, whole foods, not a lot of starchy foods, and smaller portions for the most part. I've lost about a stone. If i lost another stone of fat, i'd be very satisfied.

    megan

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm positive you can lose the weight. I need to get back on the weight-loss wagon, too. My "ideal weight" according to all the surveys, doctors, etc. should be about 175 lbs. which to me, is utterly unrealistic. I'll be happy at 190 lbs.
